Dry Erase Frame Calendar

Hello All!!! I decided to do a calendar to organize my zoo a little more. I’ve been wanting to get one for a while, but to be honest, I’m too cheap! (I think the nice word for that is frugal… Yeah, that’s what I meant! LOL)

Anyway, it took a while to complete how I wanted it. I wanted to be able to change things out on it a little bit more than the classic calendar, so I hope you like it.  😀  Anyway, here goes!!!

I used an old frame I had, I believe the frame size is 11×13. I can’t exactly remember where I got the calendar, but I’m fairly certain it was through a search for ‘blank monthly calendar,’ so you can try it out if you don’t have one.  Or if you can’t find one for free, let me know and I would be happy to scan mine in and send it.  I have copies.
I didn’t have a paper to put in the background that was big enough, so I improvised.  I used two sided cardstock to ensure that they coordinated and made basically a frame to put the calendar on.
I wanted to be able to change the months without taking it apart, so I cut a paper 3×12 and then used photo corners on it so I could change out the months.  You’ll get what I mean when you look at the finished project, the month can be taken off and changed.  Just remember to measure out the paper!!!

Excuse the arrangement of those pics!  The blogger thing hates me!!!  Anyway, I took some hooks and dipped them in black paint to match the frame.  I’m going to be honest here, the first one didn’t have much thought behind it, so I dropped it in and had to dig it out with my fingers!  As you can imagine, I had paint all over my fingers.  THEN I remembered I needed to take pics….  SO after getting paint on my camera, thank God it was acrylic, I realized it would be easier to fold and use a paperclip to ‘fish’ for my hooks!!!

****Please note: fishing at the zoo is not normally allowed, this was a one time opportunity!  LOL

I wanted to be able to hang notes and such from my calendar, so I used magnets and clothes pins.  It sticks out quite a bit, but I figured it was better for it to stick out and us be able to pull off the pin to clip things than for the monkey to break the frame, tear it off the frame, or ruin my decorations!  I used some pretty thick magnets to maintain strength.  In the center picture there are two magnets stacked.

In order to ensure the decor over the clothes pin was interchangeable, I glued cardboard on the pin and velcro on the cardboard.  Then I glued some velcro on the back of my decorations.  Again, make sure you cut the right size paper so that the cardboard is covered up!  I wanted to do a BBQ themed decoration, because I love them and it’s my birthday month so I can if I want to!  LOL.  Aaah…..  It’s so nice being the zookeeper!!!

I used my little pink hot glue gun to glue on the magnets and hooks.  Something I didn’t think about until I hung it:  weight has to be even to keep the frame from being slanted!!!  I know, this is common sense, but I was in decorate mode, not use your sense mode!!!  I was so into the peace and quiet as the whole zoo was empty which NEVER happens in the summer, that I just didn’t put much thought into anything but how I wanted to decorate it!!!

I did the other side with Paw Prints, my Monkey’s school mascot is a panther and school starts in August.  I also went back and used black ink to stamp the edges of the month holder to give it some extra beauty (Zookeeper thinks:  and cover up where I somehow managed to get marker marks on it!!!)

Here is a not so close up of the finished project.  I used string to hang the dry erase markers from a keyring on the hook.  To hang them, I put rubberbands around the lids of the marker then tied string to it.

This way, if the get twisted it doesn’t matter and we don’t have to fight to take one off, just pull the marker out of the cap.  Until I hang something on the other side, I had to hang the picture on the far right of the hangy thingy on the back to keep it straight.

Hope you all enjoyed it!!!  I know there are lots of calendars and such out there, but I like finding ways to NOT have to buy anything!!!

You are so clever. This looks much nicer than just a standard white board calendar.
