Rustic Coasters are absolutely perfect as part of your decor or as a gift. Using old denim, they can be made to fit any country decor at all. These are done more as rodeo coasters, but the sky is the limit! Soon, I’ll be doing some farm themed coasters in the same manner.

This year we are doing homemade Christmas.  We are attempting to do no shopping, only using our talents, so we shall see how this goes!  I will post more DIY gifts as time goes by, but this is my one for the day!  I used stuff I had, so I didn’t have to buy anything!

My Mom is using country decor for her home, so in the spirit of making stuff for Christmas, I decided to make her some coasters.  I wanted them to be rustic, so I wasn’t too worried about being perfects.  I think they turned out great!  I felt good about them!  Of course, now I’m nervous, all the world’s judges!  I’m just gonna trust that you’ll love them as much as I think my Momma will!

DIY Rustic Coasters

1. Cut an old pair of jeans that would have otherwise gone in the trash into 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 squares.
2. Cut cotton backing two at 5 x 5 and 2 at 4 1/2 x 4 1/2.
3. Fold the edges in on the 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 pieces, pinning and sewing them so that the edges will be folded in since cotton tears so easily.
4. Next take the denim pieces and sew it to the folded backing.  You’ll get the results looking like the ones that say Turn -N- Burn and 3 barrels 2 hearts 1 dream.
5. To get the other affect, take the 5 x 5 pieces of cotton and fold it over the denim.  Take the edges and fold in so that they look like the edge of a sheet or pillowcase.  There’s a word for it, I just can’t think of it now!
6. Pin them down and sew the two pieces together.

Now, to the fun part!!!  Decorating!!!

I used my Cricut to cut a cowboy hat from the Paper Doll Dress Up cartridge at 3 inches using thick cardstock.  I took the outline and firmly held it down, then used a toothbrush to spread on the paint.

I wouldn’t suggest using the toothbrush you brush your teeth with, but then that’s just me.  I’ll stay out of your business!  LOL

After the paint dries, carefully tear or cut the places where the Cricut forms lines in the design and use them to trace in your lines.  Just make sure you line it up the way you want it.  I used a Sharpie to trace, then went back and traced the edges.

With rustic, perfection is not preferred!  You know that worked very well for the Zoo!!!

Since my beautiful and talented Momma once rode barrels in rodeo’s, I used phrases that went with that theme.  Except Cowgirls Don’t Cry, which is from a Brooks & Dunn song featuring Reba McEntire that ALWAYS makes me think of her!
