A Glimpse at Maya Angelou’s Life

If you’ve ever read any of Maya Angelou’s work, you know how amazing of an artist she truly was.  If you’ve ever heard her READ that work, you know the world truly lost a jewel when we lost her.  I hope she reads  a little to the children in Heaven, so my baby can hear her in person, well spirit.

Maya Angelou is so beloved, she’d done so many things in her life that it could hardly be boiled down to only her poetry.  She taught around the world, she was a memorist, a playwright, screenwriter, and, most impressively, a civil rights activist.  She held many other positions throughout her life, but professionally and personally.

Maya Angelou was, and hopefully will always be, a role model.  Regardless of whatever race or creed to which you belong, she wrote in such a way that everyone could relate.  She wrote truth, which is universal.

If you are looking for something to add to your Black History Month lessons, you absolutely cannot overlook Maya Angelou.  If you are looking for true, real history at all, Maya Angelou cannot be left out.  Her autobiographies tell of a history America tries so hastily to forget, ignore, and move past.  However, every intelligent person should know that when history is forgotten, it will be repeated.

Thoughts From a Mommy

When I found out we were being blessed with a baby girl, after the initial shock was over, I began looking for strong, black female role models to present to my beautiful mixed bebe.   Having been taught a white washed history, in a caucasian dominated school system, there wasn’t a whole lot of black history being taught to us as children where I grew up.  Therefore, I set out to learn more about black history, particularly women in black history.

This Children’s Book would have been perfect for my little one.  Should we ever have another, it’s staying on the shelf.  I learned from it and it’s easy to read.  A perfect way to begin teaching your little one!

The Little People, BIG DREAMS series is full of historical figures whose dreams can teach and inspire children.  I’m looking forward to collecting the series for my children’s library, as they are a great way to help children find the right role model and encourage them that achieving one’s dreams can start from any age!

Kaycee

Hi all! My name is Kaycee. I am now learning to navigate life as a single woman. Turns out, it's not all about husband and children. Who knew? So, I'm on a journey of self discovery. I have 5 children, 3 of which are married, 5 2 are in Heaven (my beautiful baby Acadia Reign and my Diva Princess Tara Elizabeth), and 7 grandchildren! Plus, a ton of fabulous nieces and nephews! My educational background is in Psychology and Child Development but my heart is in ministry, crafts, fun, reviews and my website, My Crafty Zoo. Or at least it was, now I'm learning who I really am, beneath all of the busy family life. It's an adventure to be sure. I look forward to continuing to share my life through word and pictures with you and love hearing your feedback! Thank you for taking the time to read and allowing me to share! I look forward to reading your comments!
