7 Ways to Achieve a Cozy Bedroom This Fall

It is a small pleasure but one that is deeply felt and appreciated by everyone who experience it. That sensation of being almost awake, warm and snug in the cozy depths of a bed while a chilly grey day dawns outside and an icy wind whistles around the eaves. We are drawing closer to the time of year when we excavate the warm winter sheets from under the heap of light summery bedding and start hunting for our dusty but trusty hot water bottle. How can you add that essential coziness to your bedroom to get you through the dark, dreary winter months? Read on…

Warm Up Your Bedding

Your bedding is arguably the most important part of your bedroom, after the bed. Your entire body is in touch with your bedding and it should feel even better than it looks! Choose patterns and styles that suit your bedrooms theme, while ensuring that you select fabrics that feel wonderful against your skin. Winter sheets add a luxurious and instant warmth to your bed, negating the need for to endure the chill of the first few minutes until plain cotton sheets absorb some of your body heat! Thick Curtains

download (1)

Thick, heavy curtains are excellent at blocking out unwanted glimpses of the miserable weather outside! They are also very good at trapping heat inside the room so you are not exposed to any chill radiating off the window glass. Choose black-out type curtains in your favorite colors and shades to infuse your room with secretive snugness! For very nice curtains, my personal hot favorite is yorkshirelinen

Throws and Cushions

download (2)Your bedroom, as your living room, benefits from a scattering of comfortable soft cushions and handy throws. Choose heavy knitted throws that have an interesting texture to them, as this adds depth into your room. While looking decorative and attractive, these cosy features are also useful when you are reading in bed or when you need an extra layer to stave off the cold as you fall asleep. For decorative cushions I go for decorative cushion covers

Radiator Settings

download (3)Set your radiator to an optimum setting. This means to have your room just a little too cool, without being icy-cold. If you have your bedroom radiator set too high you will not sleep comfortably, throwing off the covers and getting sweaty. When the radiator switches off you will then become cold and clammy – not a pleasant way to spend a restful night! If, however, you set your radiator just below your optimal comfort level, you will actually sleep better and keep the covers over you all night – perfect for that waking-up-feeling-snug-and-warm feeling!

Lighten the Mood

download (4)Seasonal effective disorder or SAD affects many people at this time of year, and it has been found that insufficient light can be a trigger for the condition. Install several lamps or points of light in your room and aim to be able to create levels of light, from fairly dim (so you can get into bed without stubbing your toe) to cheerful and bright, to ease the trauma of getting out of bed!

Personal Touches

download (5)Make your bedroom uniquely yours by adding small personal touches to the room. It can be a beloved childhood toy, a picture that speaks to your inner being or anything that brings a smile to your face. The essential coziness of any room is enhanced by how the room makes you, personally, feel so do not stint in adding the things that appeal to you!

Paint it Darker

download (6)If you are brave enough to repaint your room seasonally try a darker, but not gloomy shade! Vibrant crimson or warm chocolate walls bring the room closer, making it feel snug and enclosed – like a den almost!

These seven hints will hopefully give you an idea of how to infuse your bedroom with cosy comfort ahead of the colder months that are approaching. Implement as many as you like, mixing and matching ideas until you have made your room the perfect haven for you!

Save Your Produce! with #BluApple

In our house, we are very inspired people.  Inspiration, as you know, shows itself in many forms.  In our kitchen, for example, inspiration shows itself when we go grocery shopping and decide we are going to either try out 15 new recipes in a week or when we are going to eat completely healthy, so we overbuy on fruits and veggies.  The second one wouldn’t be too bad, except things never work out that way and we always end up having veggies go bad before we get to eat them!

The Productbluapple-medium

It was with great hopes that I accepted the chance to try out BluApple.  As many of you know, I am very skeptical.  This hasn’t changed, so I went into this with my skepticism strong, as is normal.  BluApple proclaims to keep fruits and vegetables fresher for longer periods of time.  They are said to work by absorbing the gas that causes fruits and veggies to over ripen.  Sounds too good to be true, huh?  Our produce NOT ruining before we get to it????  Sure, that’s gonna work…  I’m game for just about anything.  With a 100% money back guarantee (and yes, I AM that person who WILL follow through with getting my money back) I really don’t think I could possibly go wrong for me.  I tried it.

diagramThe Test

After about 3 weeks in my crisper, I see the awesomeness of the Blu Apple!  Lettuce is my number one ruining veggie.  I buy it, use some, then forget about the rest.  I’m super excited to report that after having forgotten about my leftover lettuce for 9 days, it was STILL good!  Saved me from that quick run to the store when I realized I did indeed have some AND it was still good.  Plus, totally worth it!  Lettuce, as you probably know, wilts super fast so having it stay fresh and not wilt was awesome!  I’m sold.  No getting my money back, on to buying refills!

I could do a cost analysis of my savings for the veggies and fruits I’ve saved thus far, but that would do you no good, as you probably get a different amount of produce than I do.  So, I’m just going to say: $9.95 for two bluapples.  They are supposed to last 3 months before you need to refill them.  Refills (which is usually where companies get ya) are $9.95 for a whole years worth!  So, for $20 you will have a year and roughly 3 months where you don’t have to worry about your fruits and veggies ruining if you wait a few extra days to use them!  I’d call that a win!

Italian Beef Cabbage Stew: Simple & Delicious!

Italian Beef Cabbage Stew is an amazingly good soup! Your whole family is sure to love it!

Italian Beef Cabbage Stew

Italian Beef Cabbage Stew is so easy and so delicious!  Healthy AND it doesn’t break the bank!  It’s a winner all around!  You can add in kidney beans and corn also. It’s great all on it’s own but it also goes well on macaroni noodles or rice!

If you are doing paleo, you can easily modify this one to fit your diet.  Either way, it’s full of healthy vitamins and such!  It didn’t last long around the Zoo, even though Monkey “hates cabbage!”  haha

  1. Brown ground meat and drain.  Can I just say, this picture just did not turn out well!  LOL.  Oh well, don’t give up on me now!

  2. Place meat in a stew pot, add in onion, celery, carrots, garlic, tomatoes, tomato sauce, broth and herbs.  If you want to add in the carrots or kidney beans, now is the time.

  3. Boil for 30 minutes then turn down to a simmer for an additional 30 minutes.

  4. Add in cabbage and green beans. Simmer an additional 30 minutes and enjoy!

We have a lot of other fantastic soups and stews for you to enjoy!  You can find them here!

*Could Be* Dairy Free Crepes and Chunky Fruit Syrup Filling

I will admit that the thought of making crepes didn’t effect me at all. I hadn’t even heard of them… Then Chief Zoo Keeper decided that they were too difficult for me to make… Challenge taken! The recipe, the process, was very easy. If you are worried about trying them, don’t. I swear it was easy!

Baked Taquitos

10 large flour tortillas
1 lb Ground beef or ground turkey
taco seasoning
1 can green chiles
1 tbsp garlic minced
1 Onion chopped
1 green bell pepper chopped, optional

Brown 1-2 lbs of ground beef or ground turkey with onion, bell peppers, and or garlic if desired. We used turkey. As for the amount, just use however much you normally would! Remember that these will freeze really well to have for future meals, also Monkey took one to school and ate it cold for lunch. She really enjoyed it!
Once you’ve browned the meat, drain grease and add taco seasoning. If you used ground turkey, I suggest using low sodium beef broth to simmer it in, but it’s up to you! The broth adds a lot of great flavor! We typically use broth. Let it simmer until seasoning has soaked into the meat.
Next, mix in a can of green chilis. Stir well. Once the juice has simmered into the meat you have options. A. Mix in shredded cheese, stir, then proceed B. Proceed, then add cheese C. Skip the cheese altogether
Spray a cake pan or cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
Roll a small amount of meat mixture up into the tortilla shell. Lay into baking sheet and spray the tops. of the taquitos.
Bake for about 6-10 minutes, flip over and repeat until lightly browned to your taste at 350! Enjoy!
My Suggestions to go with them: Mexican or Spanish Rice, Refried Beans, and/or Salad. For a real authentic treat make some Tamarindo to go with it. You can find the recipe with the drinks. Check out more at www.MyCraftyZoo.com

Pizza Rolls

I made these easy pizza rolls for a church function and they were a huge success. Everyone loved them! You can easily modify the recipe to fit your taste buds! I hope you’ll enjoy them too!

Crunchy Green Beans

Ahh, summertime!!! Gotta love all of the fresh veggies available!!! I used 1 jar of canned green beans because that’s what we had! Turned out really great even though we didn’t have the almonds! BTW, I’m super sorry I didn’t get a pic, we were starving and dug in without thinking!!! LOL.

Garlic Roasted Summer Squash

A great summer or fall side dish!
